Universiade in Your City! FISU Flag Relay

There is no doubt that the FISU Flag handover ceremony was the most memorable event in the year 2011; millions of TV viewers watched with pride and excitement how the major symbol of World University Games was handed over to the next Summer Universiade host city. On August 24, 2011 the FISU Flag was delivered to Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, and we’ve made everything possible to bring this delightful event to the doorstep of each citizen of our country.

The FISU Flag Relay kicked off on September 1, 2011, when the motorcade comprising the legendary KAMAZ-master team trucks started its journey through 15 largest cities of the Volga Federal District and headed further to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The FISU Flag Relay delegation aboard a special train travelled concurrently with the motorcade.

The FISU Flag Relay was met with warmth and enthusiasm in each city the Flag was carried through. The local authorities got well-prepared for the long-awaited event; heads of some federal regions even headed the organising committees responsible for the FISU Flag Relay welcome festivities. A large number of young people got involved in the celebrations on the occasion of the Flag’s arrival to their home cities.

The FISU Flag was solemnly transported by the motorcade or carried at the head of the Universiade in Your City! march through the central streets of the host cities. By estimate, over 300,000 people became participants and spectators of the FISU Flag Relay-related events in 15 cities of Russia. Over 20,000 people took part in We Vote for Peace! events, expressing their solidarity with Tatarstan youth's aspiration for peaceful intercultural and international relations. 15 huge posters with wishes to the Russian national team for the Kazan 2013 Summer Universiade were collected during the entire length of the FISU Flag Relay. It is expected that the posters will be later set up in sports venues during the Games.
