Canoeist Petrov has long been dreaming about a Universiade medal

After winning the gold in the men’s canoe four 500m race at the Universiade in Kazan, Russian canoeist Pavel Petrov stated that he has long dreamed of a medal from an international event on the scale of the World University Games. Petrov, Kirill Shamshurin, Mikhail Pavlov, and Alexey Bovdurets finished the race with a time of 1 minute and 38.565 seconds.

Second place in the race went to Ukraine (1.38,868) with the team from Uzbekistan coming in third place with a time of 1.39,251. “A medal from the Universiade is like a dream come true for me. When you have been dreaming of this and you’ve been watching competitions like the Universiade on the TV, and then they include canoeing into the sporting events, winning just has that much more meaning for me. Also, these Games are taking place in my home country. I am very proud of my Universiade gold. It’s now first in my list of awards, I put it before my gold in the European Championships and medals from the World Championships. This is my crowning achievement,” Petrov stated. According to the athlete, for the first half of the race, his team had planned to “save our strength a bit so that we could make a push closer to the finish” and it seems that “our tactic worked perfectly”. “We could feel the Ukrainians right on top of us during the last few meters. We were leading by a lot at first. Our opponents had gained a lot on us, but we came through in end because it wasn’t easy for them to overcome all of that distance between us. We have a strong team and we could all hold out till the end. I can’t say that everything was perfect, every race is different. I would say we gave it about 90%, but that was enough to secure the win,” Petrov concluded.
