Dementieva: The American team would be stronger if the Universiade was held in the USA

If the Universiade was held in the United States, the national team of this country would put up the strongest team and tried to break away in the race for the medals, as now the Russians are doing in the competitions in Kazan, the 2008 Olympic champion in tennis Elena Dementieva said.

The Russian national team broke the Universiade record of the number of awards, including the gold medals. 136 gold medals are in the team' collection. "Who prevented others to come with the best teams? - Dementieva answer to the agency R-Sport on the question of whether the breakaway of the number of the medals earned by the Russian team is too big, comparing with the number of the medals won by other teams. - When these events took place in China, believe me, the Chineses enjoyed their breakaway, and if the Universiade held in America, no doubt, the best athletes would participate in it". "To take the good athletes at the Universiade is normal and correct" - she said, linking the lack of well-known tennis players in a singles games at the Universiade not with sporting reasons, but with the great number of the tournaments in the world which are organized in summer.

"After all, Katya Makarova, Nastya Pavlyuchenkova and Andrey Kuznetsov had initially play in singles, but someone got injured at Wimbledon, someone was preparing for a series before the US Open, - Dementieva continued. - You do not expect me in the finals of the Universiade, aren't you? I once played at the Youth Olympic games in Moscow and won". Dementieva assured that if during her career the Universiade was held in Russia, she would "truly play and do it with pleasure". "The student sports needs this tournament. And if it is needed by the student sports, then sports in general needs it. Our strong tennis players come here and supported the student movement – this is a pros. The country that holds the Universiade, is obliged to have the strong team in order to win," - the former world No 3 in tennis summarized.
