Kabaeva: Kanaeva will be competitive if she returns to gymnastics

The Olympic champion Alina Kabaeva stated that two-time Olympic champion Evgenia Kanaeva who temporarily suspended her sport career, can compete with rivals if she comes back to gymnastics.

Kanaeva is the most titled athlete in the artistic gymnastics history. At the moment she took a break in her sports career.

"If she is self-confident, then go ahead! Now they've changed rules, in addition: if you had to perform 19 elements, now there should be only nine. It was done for other countries to catch up with us but Russia singles out anyway. Cradle of artistic gymnastics is St. Petersburg, so we have to be the trendsetters in this sport. So, if Zhenya feels strength, I am sure she can compete," Kabaeva said to journalists at the Universiade. "I struggled through it too when returned from two years disqualification. I know how difficult it is, but at the same time - it is possible. If you love, it is what you enjoy, and you are not tired of your favourite activity - there is still a chance! The man can do everything! Believe me," she added.

Russian gymnasts regularly contribute gold and silver medals to the Russian collection. On Monday Russians won the gold in the team all-round competitions, Margarita Mamun won the award of the highest value in singles, and silver went to Aleksandra Merkulova. On Tuesday Russian athletes showed the best result in team events with clubs, and in single competitions Merkulova (ball) and Mamun (hoop, clubs) won the gold.
