Antonov: Russia’s basketball team showed character in final at Universiade

Russia’s basketball team played their best during the final at the Universiade and took the gold medal, said team captain Semen Antonov to R-Sport.

Russia’s basketball team emerged victorious in the final match against Australia at the Universiade, taking the gold medal. The match took place in Kazan on Tuesday with a final score of 81:74 (25:15, 16:16, 24:26, 16:17) in favor of Vasily Karasev’s team.

"We quickly took a big lead of 15 points but this was almost lost – the Australians nearly broke even in two games. But we managed to play through, despite the fact that at the end the judges were causing trouble. Fouls only for our team! One judge was from Canada, and maybe he was upset about yesterday’s defeat (Canada’s team lost in the semifinal)? But we stood our ground and every player did his best,” said Antonov to a correspondent from R-Sport. The player won the bronze medal at the London Olympics and noted the importance of their victory at the Universiade: “I dedicate this victory to all our fans, my family, wife and friends in Nizhnevartovsk and Nizhny Novgorod. And also to all of those who were against us. A big hello to them, let them envy us. It only makes us stronger!”
