27th Summer Universiade in Kazan,

July 6-17 2013

343 volunteers to support World Fencing Championships in Kazan

More than three hundred volunteers will lend a helping hand at the World Fencing Championships in Kazan. 343 boys and girls will do voluntary work in such functional areas as Accommodation, Arrivals and Departures, Broadcasting, Communications, Culture and Ceremonies, Event Services, Medical Services, Doping Control, Press Operations, Protocol, Info Desks, Sports Programme, Transportation, Attachés and others. Trainees of the Republican Fencing Children and Youth Sports School of the Olympic Reserve will work as field of play assistants during the event.

The Championships that will be held in the Tennis Academy from July 15-23 will strongly benefit from the help of on-local volunteers. 80 volunteers from the Sverdlovsk, Kirov, Novosibirsk, Samara and Saratov Oblasts, Perm Krai, Republic of Bashkortostan and the city of Moscow will gain experience working at the international event: they will assist in the field of play (58 young athletes will arrive in Kazan as part of regional volunteer delegations) and help provide medical care, event services, broadcasting, press operations, etc.

A volunteer training programme was launched as early as in April when during the selection process for the 2014 spring-summer sporting events all candidates were also offered to volunteer at the World Fencing Championships. Apart from usual eligibility requirements such as motivation, sociability, teamwork skills, proactivity and ability to handle stress, the most important criterion was proficiency in foreign languages - English, French, Spanish and others. On Friday, July 11, first volunteers took up their roles in such areas as Arrivals and Departures, Attachés, Accommodation and Information Desks.

The team of volunteers will work for 15 days at the tournament. In terms of scale, competition level, duration and schedule busyness, the 2014 World Fencing Championships will probably be one of the biggest events held in Kazan after the 2013 Summer Universiade.
