Yet another competition day wraps up at the World Fencing Chmapionships in Kazan.

The men's team sabre competition featured a Russia-vs-France meet in the quarterfinal just like in the women's event. After a victory over Japan, the Russian fencers, who took the world titles in Budapest a year ago, were to fence the French team, which defeated the Belarusian team.

France proved to be quite a tough opponent and kept the Russian fans on the edge of their seats. However, Alexey YAKIMENKO, Nikolay KOVALEV and Kamil IBRAGIMOV managed to break down the French team's resistance, 45-34. An unexpected twist happened in the semifinal where Hungary, which earlier edged out the number two seeded Italians, dropped the bout to Korea, 32-45.

The loss to the German team in the second semi came as a heavy blow to the Russian fans who packed the Kazan Tennis Academy to watch this bout. Being left behind by their opponents in the middle of the meet, 30-25, the Russians made a comeback but Max HARTUNG propelled his team into a healthy lead by producing a strong push at 35-37. He won the final bout with 10-3, which allowed Germany to advance to the final.

"We got used to the fact that our sabre fencers are world champions but it's better to lose now than at the 2016 Olympic Games," said Ilgar Mamedov, the head coach of the Russian national team.

Another disappointment came in the third place match where the Russians suffered a defeat by the Hungarian team. The German fencers Nicolas LIMBACH, Benedikt WAGNER, Max HARTUNG and Matyas SZABO confidently won the final bout. They seized the initiative in the second half of the meet and secured gold. The Korean team finished as the runner-up.

The team foil events are scheduled for Tuesday. The first-seeded women's Italian team will start with the playoff bout against Brazil and the Russian team (number two seed) will take on Venezuela.

In the men's foil the favourites of the team event, Italians, will face Brazil and the second seed of the tournament, France, will encounter Hong Kong. Russia (number three seed) will fence the Mexican team.
