Sambo deservedly added to Universiade programme, Oleg Matytsin says

Oleg Matytsin, FISU 1st Vice-President and RSSU President, sat down with us to share his thoughts about the management of the University Sambo World Cup in Kazan.

- First of all I would like congratulate the Republic of Tatarstan, the organising committee and FIAS on hosting such a tournament. The Cup was held in compliance with all international standards. It's very important that the first competitions under the auspices of FISU were held in Kazan as a test event ahead of the Universiade. Over 200 samboists from 40 countries came here to compete, which speaks volumes about sambo's popularity. This sport was deservedly added to the Universiade programme.

- How important is the World Cup for sambo wrestlers?

- It's a very prestigious tournament for students. Most athletes are members of national teams and after winning the World Cup they are likely to seek to qualify for the Universiade.

- What can you say about the Ak Bars Wresling Palace's readiness to host such high-profile competitions?

- The venue is all set and this concerns not only the facilities but also the personnel which has vast experience, volunteers that are actively involved across all functional areas in preparation for the competitions, as well as judges and managers. I'm sure there won't be any problems here at Games time and everything will be held at the highest level.

- Were there any problems in the interaction between the federations?

- These are first competitions held jointly by FIAS and FISU. There are certain differences in managing tournaments but this is where the Universiade's and other university competitions' value lies in, they enable federations to cooperate and enrich experience.
