Belt wrestling will make a debut at the Kazan 2013 Summer Universide.
Belt wrestling is included in the list of non-Olympiс sports, it is officially supported by UNESCO. The International Belt Wrestling Association (IBWA) and All-Russian Belt Wrestling Federation have been successfully promoting and developing belt wrestling throughout the world and nationwide. Competitions and championships are held on local, national, regional and international levels.
Belt wrestling was revived in Russia in 2003 when the All-Russian Belt Wrestling Federation was established.
The first international belt wrestling competition – World Belt Wrestling Championships – took place in Kazan in 2005 and became a gift for the capital of Tatarstan on the occasion of its 1,000th anniversary. The championships featured classical style events with freestyle events making a debut.
Kurash competitions are held practically in any region of the Republic of Tatarstan. For many years it has been considered as the highlight of Sabantuy, the national holiday which takes place every year in all parts of Tatarstan and Russia.
